Thinking About Alcohol

I read an interesting French news article today that says that alcohol kills more than AIDS or tuberculosis or violence. 400% more.

I don't care if people drink or not. I enjoy a good drink from time to time. You can do whatever you want so long as you're not hurting anyone, if you ask me.

That said, I have witnessed and experienced way too many horrors directly caused by or linked to alcohol and addiction - people whose entire lives were not only defined, but annihilated by alcohol - so I found this article interesting.

  • My cousin killed himself drunk driving his motorcycle. Many believe he actually used the alcohol and motorcycle to commit suicide.
  • My uncle destroyed his life, all of it. Relationships, work, health, etc. He died alone in a world of alcohol's making, and nobody even knew for about three weeks when patrons at the local bar noticed he hadn't been around in a while and contacted the authorities.
  • ** ****** has been an abusive alcoholic for as long as I have known him.
  • ********************* has had major alcohol and drug problems for years. Although he's sober now. Fingers crossed.
  • **** has never held a job longer than the one he had in high school. Too ravaged by alcoholism and depression and thinking he's better than everybody else.
  • *******, *******, and *********** are closet alcoholics who drink every single night in order to self-medicate for depression and who knows what else. Oh, to be able to sleep, too.
And the list goes on.

Fortunately, for the most part, I don't like the taste of alcohol.

It's such a sad state of affairs.

  1. People are stupid when it comes to alcohol. And you can't fix stupid. But you can still love and care for stupid and be stupid's friend. Just because you love and care for someone, just because you're there friend, doesn't mean you condone their poor choices and bad behaviors. But it IS very hard to separate yourself.
